On Saturday, March 4, Westhills PONY Baseball (West Hills, California) held its 47th Spring Opening Day Ceremony. Former MLB pitcher and Westhills Baseball Alumni, Randy Wolf, was the keynote speaker. The morning started off with a flyover from Condor Squadron.
46 teams, along with members from approximately 600 families, gathered on the Colt Field to celebrate. A moment of silence was held for Mike Noblitt (aka Mr. Westhills Baseball), who was a part of the league for 27 years and passed away unexpectedly 10 months ago. 20 thoroughbreds were rewarded, three sportsmanship awards from the upper divisions were handed out, as well as our annual lifetime achievement award. The league also recognized three aging out board members who were given certificates from the local councilman's office.
Randy threw out the ceremonial first pitch then lots of great baseball memorabilia items were raffled off, which was organized by former MLB pitcher, Westhills Baseball Alumni and current board member, Jeff Suppan. At the very end of the ceremony, the legendary announcer, Vin Scully, pre-recorded a message and announced "ittttttssssss timmmeeee for Westhills Baseball!"
Following the 70 minute ceremony, they went straight to baseball and had 10 teams on all five fields playing ball! It was an exciting day for all and one that will never be forgotten.
